HISTORY OF HBCU ALUMNI HALL OF FAME OF NORTH FLORIDA

The Gateway Classic was an annual football contest played in Jacksonville with Bethune-Cookman University as the host team. During the 2001 event, the Steering Committee, led by A. Ray Brinson, introduced an alumni recognition event as an official classic activity. This concept was in keeping with the annual Historically Black Colleges & Universities Week proclaimed by the President of the United States via Executive Order usually around the Labor Day Weekend which coincided with the annual football classic.

The Gateway Classic game was removed from the Bethune-Cookman schedule after the 2006 game against Southern University. However, the HBCU recognition event continued, and was sponsored by the Duval/Nassau Alumni Chapter of Bethune-Cookman. During the preliminary planning for the 2008 event, a suggestion was made to expand the scope of the committee and invite other HBCU Alumni Chapters in North Florida to join the committee. During the first meeting, the history of the recognition event was explained to the group and from that discussion the concept of establishing an HBCU Alumni Hall of Fame (HOF) evolved. The founders were: A. Ray Brinson, Peggy Turner and Ira Turner, Bethune-Cookman University; Juliette Fields, Carl Johnson and Marguerite Warren, Edward Waters College. The purpose of the hall of fame is to honor and recognize alumni of HBCUs who had: 1) Made outstanding contributions of money, talent, and time to their alma mater. 2) Achieved outstanding accomplishments in their respective profession. 3) And or performed outstanding community service where they live, work and worship. Nominees who live in Duval and surrounding counties (not to exceed a 150 mile radius) are eligible for nomination. The respective schools/alumni chapters would make the nomination and the HBCU HOF Steering Committee would have the final approval for induction. The 2006 Gateway Classic Excellence Award winners became the founding members of the North Florida HBCU Alumni Hall of Fame. They were: Archie Gallon, Edward Waters College; James Harris, Grambling  versity; Marsha Holmes, Morgan State University; Irving Matthews, Southern University, and Larry Roziers, Bethune-Cookman University.

Inductees for the Class of 2008 were: Dr. Brenda Simmons, Bethune-Cookman University; Demetral Wester, Florida A & M University; Nathaniel Washington, Florida Memorial University; Dr. Roy I. Mitchell, Edward Waters College, (Posthumous), and Attorney Willie Walker, Savannah State University.

This year’s class of 2009 honorees are: Michelle Carter-Scott (NBA Vince Carter's mother), Bethune-Cookman University; Kenneth Reddick, Hampton University; Walter White, Florida A & M University; Geraldine Orr, Edward Waters College and Bubba Mattox. Savannah State University.

The first Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Dr. Ezekiel Bryant (Posthumous)for his decades of leadership and contributions in education and community service. He will be inducted along with the members of this year’s class. A joint resolution will also be issued by the three HBCUs he attended, Edward Waters College, Bethune-Cookman University and Florida A & M University.
